2005 14U Long Island Astros CBW Tournament 7/16 - 7/22 Oneonta, NY (scroll to the bottom of this page for CBW team picture)

After participating in the COOPERSTOWN BASEBALL WORLD Tournament the week of 7/16 the Astros finished with a 5-2 record, which was the 3rd best record in the 14U division!! Quite an accomplishment while competing against teams from Michigan, Massachusetts, Ohio, Maryland and NY State. Some of the highlights from our week in Oneonta included Junior Fair winning the outfield throw skills competition, Vinny Iannece leading the tournament in homers & doubles and Mike Sciortino leading in steals. The Astros played a strong tournament and had a legitimate shot of winning the Championship, our hopes were dashed when in our initial playoff game our ace, Junior Fair broke his thumb and our centerfielder Mike Sciortino badly sprained his ankle, nonetheless, the Astros nearly won anyway! We did manage to win our 2nd and last playoff game to finish up with a 5-2 record! Vinny Iannece pounded the ball all tournament long, Rich Doyle added big hits on many occasions and Matt Malley played a flawless shortstop while also missing 2 games with a badly sprained ankle. Our ace Junior Fair won 2 ballgames, JC Clancy contributed big time on the rubber as well winning 2 games and TJ Arsenault pitched a complete game victory as well. All in all a very successful tournament for all our Astro boys and coaches!

In the second game later in the day, the Astros squared off against the Livingston County Crush (MI).  Right-hander John Carlo Clancy started for the Astros and pitched 4 strong innings, leaving the game with the Astros trailing 6-3.  Astros pitcher Junior Fair came in to pitch the last 2 innings and gained his second victory of the day as the Astros staged an impressive comeback, scoring 2 runs in the 5th inning on a leadoff single by JC Clancy who advanced to 2B on a sac bunt by TJ Arsenault and scored moments later on a clutch RBI single by Rich Doyle, who also scored on a hard liner to RF.  With the team now trailing 6-5, the Astros scored 4 runs in the top of the 6th inning on BB’s to Matt Malley and Junior Fair, who both advanced on a sac bunt by Dan Levine, and scored on a clutch single by Vinny Iannece. Vinny came around to score on a hard liner to RF by Ethan Peck, who also scored the 9th run on hustle and more daring baserunning. Junior pitched 2 shut-out innings as the Astros ‘crushed’ the Crush 9-6 for their 2nd victory of the tournament, see boxscore below.

On Monday July 18th, the Astros played the Germantown Hawks (MD) in the first game of a doubleheader on the home field of the Oneonta State Red Dragons.  Junior Fair started and pitched 3 1/3 innings for the Astros, who played poor defense behind their Ace Pitcher.  The Astros jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the 1st inning as Mike Sciortino reached 1B safely, stole 2B and advanced to 3B on a sac bunt by Junior Fair.  Dan Levine then walked and stole 2B only to score on a big double by Vinny Iannece, who also scored on a RBI single by Rich Doyle.  The Hawks battled back, scoring 3 runs in the bot-2 to tie the game and 5 more runs in the 4th inning. Vinny came on to relieve Junior and finish the 4th inning with the Astros trailing 8-4.  The Astros again tried to comeback, as Cam Maron singled, stole 2B and scored on FC in the 4th inning, and 2 more runs by Sciortino and Levine in the 5th inning, but it was not to be as they lost a heartbreaker 9-6, see boxscore below.

In their second game of the day, the Astros faced the winless but tough team from Oneonta (Hannaford, NY).  With right-hander TJ Arsenault on the hill, the Astros played a thrilling see-saw, back-and-forth game in which they eventually triumphed 9-7.  The Astros were lead by lead-off batter and the tournament’s top base stealer Mike Sciortino, who was 1-1 with 3 BB’s, 3 SB’s and 3 runs scored; followed by Dan Levine who scored 2 runs, Vinnie Iannece with 1B, BB, Sac Fly and 2 RBI’s; Nick Sekula with 2 singles a 1 RBI; and Rich Doyle with a single and 2 RBI’s.   On defense, Catcher Cam Maron nailed 2 runners at the plate on a nice throw from 1B Nick Sekula on a 1-5-2 DP in the 3rd inning, and the again on a 9-4-2 relay from deep RF by Junior Fair to 2B John Clancy to home.  CF Mike Sciortino also made an outstanding running catch in RCF in the 4th inning saving at least 2 runs, see boxscore below.

On Tuesday July 19th, the Astros squared off against the South Shore Spartans (MA), prevailing 10-8 in a close but high-scoring, time-limited game in which the Astros never trailed.  The Astros, with Rich Doyle on the mound, jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead in the 1st inning, but the Spartans rallied back with 4 more runs in the 2nd to close the gap to 6-5.  After  JC Clancy came on to relieve Rich Doyle in the 2nd, the Astros rallied for 2 more runs in the bottom of the 2nd, only to have the Spartans push 2 more across the dish in the top of the 3rd to close to 8-7.  The Astros scored twice more in the 4th to make it 10-7 as the Spartans scored only once more in the top 5th inning to close to 10-8, only to have the game called on the 1 hr 55 minute time limit after the Astros batted in the bot-5th.  The Astros were lead by Vinny Iannece (2 2B’s, 2 RS’s, 4 RBI’s) who played most of the game sick to his stomach, Mike Sciortino (2-2, BB, 2 SB’s, 3 RS’s), Junior Fair (1B, SB, 2 RS’s), Dan Levine (1B, BB, SB, Sac Fly, RBI, 2 RS’s) and Cam Maron (bunt single, RS). The Astros got more inspiration from the gutsy play of Matt Malley, who before the game went to the hospital to get medical clearance to play and returned late in the game to play an inning at SS for the ailing Vinny "boom", and also closed out the game by pitching a 1-2-3 inning on a tape reinforced ankle (game records show that the Doctor and Matt shared the save!!!).  CF Mike Sciortino also made another outstanding catch on a screaming liner seemingly over his head in deep CF, see boxscore below.

On Wednesday July 20th, the Astros began their playoff run as the third overall seed with a 4-1 record against the tough Oneonta (Hannaford, NY) team in yet another thrilling see-saw, back-and-forth game.  The Astros started their ace right-hander, Junior Fair, and jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when lead-off batter Mike Sciortino walked, stole 2B and advanced to 3B and then scored on 2 wild pitches. Oneonta countered by scoring 2 in their half of the 2nd inning on a 2-run homer just over the LF fence to take a 2-1 lead.  Junior Fair doubled in the 3rd and advanced to 3B on Cam Maron’s bunt hit.  Unfortunately, both Junior and Cam were left stranded, but of greater concern was Junior’s left thumb which he jammed sliding into 3B.  The Astros took a 3-2 lead in the 3rd when Rich Doyle hit a clutch 2-out double to score Dan Levine and Vinny Iannece. Team Oneonta nicked the Astros for a run in both the 4th and 5th innings to take a temporary 4-3 lead when in the bot-5th the Astros scored 2 runs on Vinny ‘Boom Goes The Dynamite’ Iannece’s 2-run 330+ foot  blast over the LF wall to take a 5-4 lead. Undaunted by that amazing homer, Oneonta came up in the top-6th and knocked in 5 runs on 6 hits, which might have been more were it not for a great DP to end the inning on a fly to Vinny in LF who made the catch and made a strong relay throw to P Rich Doyle who cut the throw & flipped the ball to Catcher Cam Maron to nail the tagging runner at the plate. The Astros appreciate the gutsy performance of Junior Fair who pitched into the 6th inning with a painful jammed left thumb and Rich Doyle who relieved Junior in the 6th with 1 out and got the final 2 outs.  The Astros attempted one final comeback in the bot-6th, but failed to score a run as the game ended with Oneonta’s leftfielder robbing Cam of a hit with a diving / sliding catch on a sinking line drive, see boxscore below.

On Thursday July 21st, the Astros played their second playoff game.  In a rematch of these two teams, the Astros squared off at 8:00 am against the Livingston County Crush (MI).  Right-hander TJ Arsenault started for the Astros and pitched into the 2nd inning, leaving the game with the Astros trailing 2-1.  Astros pitcher John Carlo Clancy came in to pitch 4+ strong innings and gained his second victory of the tournament as the Astros ‘manufactured’ 4 runs and held on to win 4-3.  In the first inning, Matt Malley led off the game with a walk and came around to score after 2 wild pitches. Dan McEnery singled in the 3rd inning and came around to score after Matt Malley broke up a DP on Cam Maron’s hard grounder to Crush’s 2Bman with a hard (but legal!) slide into 2B forcing the SS to throw the ball in the dirt past 1B.  In the 4th inning, Vinny ‘Boom’ Iannece led off with an unintentional intentional walk (as the Crush were afraid to pitch to him!), and promptly stole 2B and 3B. Vinny scored on an error by the Crush SS on Rich Doyle’s hard grounder in the hole.  Rich advanced to 2B on a wild pitch and later scored on a Crush error while fielding a sac bunt by TJ Arsenault. Ethan Peck and Nick Sekula both singled but were unable to score as JC Clancy was robbed of a hit on a hard liner back to the pitcher. Dan McEnery collected his second hit of the game leading off the 5th inning with a liner just past the outstretched leap of the Crush SS, see boxscore below.
